ULANZI VL02 2.7m Carbon Fibre Selfie Stick for Action Cameras + Phone Clamp

The ULANZI VL02 2.7m Carbon Fibre Selfie Stick (Model: VL02) extends from 41cm to 277cm, putting an action camera, a 360° camera, a compact camera or a smartphone high above head height, far out at arm's reach, or down low near the ground. The 1/4"-20 male stud on top takes 1/4" thread cameras directly, the included Finger Mount Adapter converts it for action cameras that utilise GoPro-style Finger Mounts, and the included Phone Mount adds smartphones from 57mm to 96mm wide.

The 2.7m pole is perfect for drone-like shots, and because it is strong and rigid, it helps achieve the invisible selfie stick effect in 360° camera stitching software.

Using the included Finger Mount Adapter and a housing
Older GoPro bodies have no mount of their own. The camera's Protective Housing or Frame carries the fingers.

If your camera has a standard 1/4"-20 tripod socket, or a GoPro-style Finger Mount, it fits — whether or not it is named above.

The Finger Mount Adapter has a 1/4"-20 female thread on the bottom and fingers on top, so it turns the pole's thread into a GoPro-style finger mount. It weighs 19g.

The Phone Mount:

The included Phone Mount grips phones from 57mm to 96mm wide, which covers everything from a compact handset to a large phone in a case. It sports a Finger Mount at the base, so it goes onto the Finger Mount Adapter the same way an action camera does.

There is a cold shoe on top of the phone holder for a small light or a microphone above the phone, and a 1/4"-20 female thread in the back. It weighs 28g.

How It Extends and Locks:

The pole has nine sections — a top group of four extensions, a bottom group of four, and the base section you hold. Two of them are controlled by metal twist collars. The rest are twist-tight: each section tightens against the one below it rather than against a collar of its own.

Everything locks clockwise, looking from the base upwards. Because the thin sections hold on by friction against each other, each one has to be twisted firmly before you put weight on it, and every one has to be loosened again before you push the pole back down.

The pole alone weighs 319g. With the Finger Mount Adapter and the Phone Mount both fitted, the whole kit is 366g.

800g is the Figure to Plan Around:

Ulanzi's maximum recommended load is 800g. That is an action camera, a 360 camera, a phone, or a compact camera — and it is the total, so a phone plus a light on the cold shoe counts as one number, not two.

It is also a figure that gets harder to hold the further the pole goes out. At 41cm, 800g sits close to your hand. At 277cm, it is nearly three metres away, and the leverage on the lowest section is considerable. Treat 800g as a ceiling at full extension, not a target.

About the "Invisible" Pole:

The pole is not invisible. It is solid carbon fibre, and it is physically there in front of the lens. What happens is that a 360° camera removes it in software — the camera's stitch line runs down the length of the pole, and the finished footage is rendered without it, which is what produces the drone-style shot with no drone.

A straight, slim pole gives that software the easiest job, and this one is both. But the result comes from the camera, not from the stick. On an ordinary action camera with a single forward lens, there is no stitch line, and the pole will show in the shot if it is in frame.

A 1/4" Thread in the Base:

The bottom end carries a 1/4"-20 female thread, so the collapsed pole screws onto a mini tripod and stands up on a desk, a table or the ground. A wrist strap is included, threading through a small hole at the base.
